Pilates Chairs
The Pilates chair concentrates spring resistance, a pedal and a padded seat into the smallest footprint of any apparatus. This collection covers wunda and combo chairs from BASI Systems, Elina Pilates and Align Pilates, from the classical pattern to handled studio versions, all new from an authorized dealer.
How to choose a Pilates chair
The BASI Systems Wunda Chair follows the classical pattern, the chair Joseph Pilates designed, executed in BASI's wooden build. If you train or teach the classical repertoire, this is the reference point in the collection.
Combo chairs add adjustability. Elina builds three tiers, the Combo Chair, the Wood Combo Chair and the ELITE wood chair with handles, and Align's Combo Chair III is its current studio version. A combo chair converts between single and split pedal, which opens single-side work the fixed pedal does not, and handles widen the balance repertoire for newer users.
Two outliers round it out: Elina's Baby chair is the smaller classical piece, and the BASI Arm Chair Barrel Set pairs the classical arm chair with barrel work, putting it halfway into barrel territory.
Honest fit: a chair complements a reformer more often than it replaces one. As the only machine it suits experienced practitioners and very tight spaces; as the second machine it adds a format a reformer does not cover.
Warranty and delivery
BASI Systems covers wooden frames for 10 years, Elina Pilates covers frame components for life with 2 years on the rest, and Align Pilates covers wooden frames and mechanisms for 5 years. Free curbside freight within the continental US; per-brand terms in the warranty and returns policy.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Pilates chair?
A compact apparatus built around a spring-loaded pedal and a padded seat. You work sitting, standing, lying and from the floor, pressing the pedal against adjustable resistance. It trains strength, balance and control in roughly the floor space of an armchair, which is why studios and small homes both keep one.
What is a wunda chair?
The original chair design from Joseph Pilates: one seat, one sprung pedal, a deliberately simple machine with a deep classical repertoire. The BASI Systems Wunda Chair in this collection is a faithful modern build of that pattern.
Wunda chair or combo chair?
Wunda for classical fidelity and simplicity; combo for adjustability, the split pedal and optional handles that suit mixed-level use. Studios teaching a broad clientele usually pick combo chairs; classical teachers often want the wunda.
Is a Pilates chair good for a small apartment?
It is the most space-efficient machine in the method, and it moves out of the way far more easily than a carriage-based machine. If even a folding reformer will not fit, the chair is the apparatus that still will. For a fuller setup later, see home studios.
